Tau Mu Chapter History
Then…
The Tau Mu Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at the University of South Florida was
first installed on May 5th, 1968, with the Iota Rho Chapter from Florida State
University officiating. S. Richard Kuhar was the first President of Tau Mu
Chapter. In November 1975 Tau Mu Chapter initiated women as full members using
the Brotherhood ritual. Though this was contrary to the National Constitution
and By-Laws, Tau Mu chose this course of action due to strong pressure from the
State of Florida through the University of South Florida that men and women must
be equal in a service organization. However, at the 1976 National Convention in
Atlanta , Georgia , Alpha Phi Omega’s Constitution and By-Laws were amended to
make women full members in the Fraternity. As a result of the lack of interest
on campus as well as no word from any membership on campus since 1988, Tau Mu
was declared inactive in 1991…
Now…
In November of 2002 Peter Kahn, an Alumnus from the Eta Sigma Chapter at
Illinois College, expressed interest in reactivating the Tau Mu Chapter here at
the University of South Florida. With the help of advisor Ken Tinkler the
process to reactivate Tau Mu began. On April 25, 2003, the Tau Chapter from the
University of Florida conducted the first Petitioning Ritual in the University
Lecture Hall on the USF campus. Three more Petitioning Rituals were conducted on
October 17th, 2003, December 4th, 2003 and February 10th, 2004 . Finally, after
almost a full year of hard work Alpha Phi Omega was officially brought back to
the University of South Florida. On March 27th, 2004 Tau Mu was re-activated
with the Tau Chapter (our Big Brother Chapter) from the University of Florida
officiating. 32 Petitioners became Brothers of the Tau Mu Chapter at this
ceremony.
