BGSO meeting minutes

Dec 2004

Last meeting of the semester!

We have $200 or more dollars for travel grants, so if you're going anywhere and not presenting, contact Ali Meyers.

First meeting next semester: January 21st. We will be discussing the next year's budget, so if you want to have a say in how the money's spent, show up! We will also plan our February camping trip.

Brown Bag: Sign up with Amanda Baker if you want to practice a presentation in front of a rapt, attentive audience! Susie, Neal, Sean, and Lisa have already signed up!

COOKIE DAY: Sunday Dec. 5th at Lisa Whitenack's (directions have been emailed). In addition to making yummy, naughty cookies, great Christmas movies will be playing, such as National Lampoon's Chrismas Vacation, A Christmas Story, and Santa Conquers the Martians (you don't want to miss that one!)

Spring Intramurals: Kickball (Sundays starting Jan. 30th), bowling (Thursdays starting Jan. 27th), sand volleyball tournament (Friday April 1st), and swim meet (Friday April 8th).

Seminar committee: Jeanette says get your nominations in for the student-invited speakers ASAP. Voting will be held next week. Anna and Celina have volunteered to take over for Jeanette next semester.

Curriculum committee: Susie is taking over for Kris. The committee will be looking for 2 temporary instructors, one physiology, one genetics/micro. They are particularly looking for applicants who have the skill to develop and run an online course, since the University is contemplating making a biology class a requirement for all undergrads and we don't have the space or the faculty for this!

An academic dishonesty blacklist was also discussed.

Grad students need to take classes! Since the structured course requirement was eliminated, grad enrollment has dropped. The University will not allow a class to be offered unless there is a minimum number of student credit hours met (i.e. enough tuition moola has been shelled out).

Faculty search committee: Amanda reported that Allison Cleveland will be hired as the permanent instructor in August, and Ashok Upadhyaya will be hired to a permanent position soon thereafter.

Have a great semester break!
