CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

April 8, 2008

It's been two months since our last update so it's time to fill you in with all the exciting things going on with the construction of the new Marshall Student Center. It' s hard to believe that we are only five months away from opening up the doors to the new facility. Although there will still be construction going on when we open the building at the start of the 2008-2009 Academic Year, we can't wait for that special day in USF history when the vision of our new student center opens its doors.

  • The construction of the new student center is ongoing 10 hours a day, 7 days a week and everyday we see significant changes being made to the facility.
    • The conference wing of the building is almost complete with ceiling tiles in place, projector screens installed, HVAC systems up and running, walls painted, millwork installed, and the floors of the storage and mechanical rooms painted. Add another coat of paint on the walls and put in the carpet and we're ready to go.
    • The pre-patina copper paneling has been installed on the north chamber oval.
    • Installation of ceramic wall and floor tile in the restrooms has been completed in the entire west portion of the building.
    • The ballroom's operable dividing wall panels have been installed.
    • Drywall installation has been completed in Area C (conference quadrant of the building) as well as on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors of Area A (Ballroom and Administrative Offices)
    • Framing of the offices on all four floors of the Student Life Tower is almost complete.
    • Brick and stucco installation continues.
    • The exterior façade of the theater is almost complete and installation of the pre-patina copper panels will begin soon.
    • The past month we have seen significant glass curtain walls installed in the atrium area and the Student Life Tower.
    • Furniture for the office areas and for the meeting rooms with fixed seating has been ordered.
    • The grand staircase from the atrium to the second floor and the Royal Palm Ballroom has been installed.
    • Work to install the three passenger and one service elevators.
  • We hosted student union officials from the University of Surrey, United Kingdom and hosted a delegation from the University of Florida. They all were all very impressed and jealous about our new student life facility.
