One physical landmark of Greek organizations on a university campus is a Greek Community or Greek Row where fraternities and sororities are often housed together.
At USF, we are pleased that plans for our own new Greek Community are underway. Through unique partnerships between the university and Greek alumni boards and housing corporations, discussions that have taken place over the past several years are finally nearing an end and a decision on the specifics for constructing these new homes for Greek organizations is expected soon.
Architects were recently hired to render possible prototypes of what the Greek Community might look like, and on May 24, 2001, the Florida Board of Regents approved the revised Residence Life Phase III plan, which includes this Greek Community. Plans are being developed, with the first possible move-in date for our Greek members coming as soon as Fall 2003.
USF’s Greek Community would be located in a beautifully wooded area on the northeast corner of campus where the golf driving range currently exists (see graphic insert at left). The preliminary plans would allow for each organization to customize their interiors with such features as a chapter room, large social and study areas, and even a small computer lab. The twelve homes in the first phase of the building project would back up to a landscaped pedestrian walkway which will be an ideal place for social functions such as Greek Week and Homecoming events.
As these plans take shape, excitement continues to build among students and alumni alike. USF’s Greek Community will soon be a beautiful home for our fraternity and sorority members as well as a tremendous point of pride for our entire university community.
