Constitution
I. Name

The name of this group shall be "Quiz Bowl at USF".

II. Purpose

The purpose of Quiz Bowl at USF shall be to field a team to represent the University of South Florida in academic quiz competitions such as College Bowl Inc. (CBI), National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT), and Academic Competition Federation (ACF); to promote academic competition on campus; and to teach students academic facts from various disciplines to enhance their overall education and collegiate experience.

III. Membership

100% of the active membership must be USF students. There shall be no associate memberships. Membership in the club is open to all USF students. All members shall be welcome to all practices and meetings of the team; additionally, a traveling team, to be selected by the Coordinator and the Coach, shall attend academic competitions versus other schools.

IV. Duties of the Quiz Bowl at USF

The duties of the members of Quiz Bowl at USF shall include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Attending team practices
  2. Attending competitions, which may include travel to other schools
  3. Helping coordinate and carry out campus tournaments, team recruiting, and promotions to help the club grow and receive recognition on campus

V. Quorum

A quorum shall be composed of fifty percent plus one of current active voting members.

VI. Officers

Coordinator: The Coordinator shall be elected by a majority vote of the membership, with the approval of the Coach. The Coordinator’s duties are to promote Quiz Bowl at USF on campus, arrange practice times and meeting places, and line-up competition for the Quiz Bowl at USF team. This competition can be in the form of on-campus tournaments, in-club tournaments, and/or travel to tournaments at other schools. The Coordinator, along with the Coach, also has the final say on what team members will represent the school at competitions.

Assistant Coordinator: The Assistant Coordinator shall be elected by a majority vote of the membership, with the approval of the Coach. The Assistant Coordinator’s duties include assisting the Coordinator with his or her tasks, writing correspondence for the team, submitting a budget to the Financial Review for A&S allocation from the Student Government, and recording all financial transactions of the team.

Coach: The Coach shall be a member of the USF Faculty, and shall be responsible for mentoring the team in practices, moderating at tournaments hosted by Quiz Bowl at USF, and traveling with the team to off-campus competitions. The Coach, along with the Coordinator, also has the final say on what team members will represent the school at competitions.

VII. Officer and Membership Removal Clause

If any officer or member fails to uphold his or her post by a 2/3 majority vote of the active, voting members, he or she shall be removed.

IX. Meetings

Quiz Bowl at USF will practice weekly, or as determined by the Coordinator and Coach. The Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator, and Coach will also meet at least once per semester to discuss team goals and business. The team will also travel to off-campus competition at least once per semester.

X. Rules of Order

Meetings will be run according to Robert’s Rules of Order when necessary. Team practices will be run according to a format determined by the Coordinator and the Coach.

XI. Anti-Hazing Clause

This organization prohibits its members, both individually and collectively, from committing any acts of hazing as defined herein:

"Hazing" means any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of safety of a student for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with this organization. Such term shall include, but not be limited to, any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to the elements, forced consumption of any food, liquor, drug, or other forced activity which adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual to extreme mental stress, such as sleep deprivation, forced exclusion from social contact, forced conduct which could result in extreme embarrassment, or any other forced activity which could adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual. For the purpose of this section, any activity as described above upon which the initiation or admission into or affiliation with this organization is directly or indirectly conditioned shall be presumed to be a "forced activity," the willingness of an individual to participate in such activity notwithstanding.

XII. Amendment/By-Law Changes

Quiz Bowl at USF shall operate in accordance to all University, Student Government, Student Activities, and Student Organization Advisory Board (SOAB) provisions. Any amendment or by-law changes regarding Quiz Bowl at USF shall be passed by a quorum vote (50+1), and will be considered pending until presented and reviewed by Student Activities.

XIII. Organization Agreement

Organization agrees to abide by FL state statute #240.262 regarding hazing. Furthermore, agrees to abide by all Student Activities policies as outlined in the Student Handbook, to check the organization’s mailbox regularly, to communicate via email upon request, and to update the organization’s records (Officer Listings Form) whenever there is a change.
