at the University of South Florida, Tampa

  • When: Saturday, November 17, 2001
  • Format: Questions of NAQT-regionals level difficulty for 1st- and 2nd-year players.* No Packet submission is required.

* Questions will be written for first/second year quiz bowl players. Masters are welcome as coaches and moderators. This tournament is a mirror of the Illinois Novice Tournament.

Tentative Schedule:

1. Check-in is from 8-9 a.m. in Cooper Hall, Room 103 (Auditorium). If you have not paid already, payment is due at check-in time. Official receipts will be issued.

2. Question sets may be purchased for $15; you will receive a hard copy of all the questions at the end of the tournament (soft copy may be emailed afterward as well).

3. Rules announcement will be at 9 a.m. in Room 103. The basic plan is to run 20-question games, untimed. Normal ACF-style QB rules will be in effect (10 point toss-ups, no power marks, -5 wrong interrupts, all boni worth 30 points, etc.)

4. Tournament format: 24-Teams, divided into three divisions. Each team will play full rpund robin within its division.

5. Lunch: there are many restaurants near campus: Northwest (Fletcher & Bruce B Downs): Hooters, Wendy's; West (Fowler): Miami Subs, China First Buffet, Chili's, Bennigan's, et al.; Southeast (Fowler): Perkins, Einstein's, Planet Smoothie, Taco Bell, Chick-Fil-A, Burger King, Gladstone's Chicken, Smoothie King, Boston Market, Pita's, Subway, et al.; East (56th): Golden Corral, MacDonald's. Additionally, USF QB will provide pizza and drinks for all tournament moderators and volunteers. MAYBE YOUR BEST BET: a fraternity is serving barbeque lunch on campus for $5. Check with Nap for more details. Don't come back late from lunch, or you'll have to forfeit that match.

  FORMAT: Please meet in Room 103 at 9 a.m. for rules meeting. Here's how the format works: There are three round robin brackets, each sorted for approximately equal strength. The standings from round robin play will be used for seeding the playoff "flights". Thus, the top teams will play each other in the Gold flight, etc. Playoff flights are single elimination (with consolation games). Each of the flight winners receives a trophy, as will the top individual scorers from the tournament.

Baymont has a nice pool area, free continental breakfast, and is located directly across from Busch Gardens, and is 1.7 miles from USF.

They also have a full hot complimentary breakfast.
