 What is Shotokan Karate?
It is a method of self defense using the hands, feet and other parts of the body as weapons. It originated in Okinawa and spread to Japan and the rest of the world. It uses many low stances and emphasizes a straight line of attack. Master Funakoshi describes the purpose of karate best: "Its purpose is that one's mind and body be trained and developed in a spirit of humility; and that in critical times, one be devoted utterly to the cause of justice." For more information on Shotokan Karate, please see our reading list.

 What are the benefits?
The nature of karate is such that it requires the body to move in all directions using all the muscle groups, thus creating a balanced development of the whole body. It is an effective means of self defense which relies principally on striking, kicking and thrusting techniques. Karate training is as mental and spiritual as it is physical. It is no different from other martial arts in fostering the traits of courage, courtesy, integrity, humility and self control in those who have found its essence.

  How Can I Join?
If you have trained in a martial art before, you may be eligible to join the ongoing Intermediate/Advanced classes. Just come to the class before its stated start time and discuss it with the instructor. Non-beginners are subject to the regular semester fees ($85 per semester for USF students; $100 for non-students. Payment plans are available.).

If you have never trained in a martial art, you can join by attending the free beginner class during the sign-up period which occurs at the beginning of each Fall and Spring semester. Exact times will be posted at the beginning of the semester. You can also look in the calendar section of the campus newspaper, The Oracle, and around campus on the bulletin boards, etc.

There are no training fees until you have trained one semester, however you will have to pay a $30 testing fee and purchase a "gi" (plain white karate uniform). After your first semester, regular fees are in effect.

The University also offers college-credit beginner and intermediate karate classes.

All prices are subject to change.
